What is supply teaching?

Supply Teacher work at schools through a 3rd party, either organised through the Local Education Authority or Privately run Supply Teaching Agency.

The organisation will endevour to find work for you at schools but are cannot be held responsible for if there is nothing available.

How much will I be paid?

Payment is daily and NQT's can expect in the region of £80-£105 a day, dependent upon the region you work. Holiday and Sick pay are not covered by agencies when you work.

How much work will I get?

This depends on a number of things. Time of year, your ability and flexibility, the agency you work with, and luck all play factors.

Different times of year tend to be busier than others. The Sept-Oct half term are quiet for day to day work and the final half term before summer, when all the exam classes have finished, also leads to less demand. That said should you find a long-term assignment during these period you will more then likely be in continual work.

Long-Term Vs Day-to-day Supply

The ongoing debate. Day-to-Day gives you flexibility but with that flexibility also come uncertainty of not finding work on particular days. One benefit from day-to-day work is that you will experience a variety of schools and get a feel for what environments suit you. You can also enjoy the fact than when that final bell of the day goes there is nothing left to think about until the following day.

Long-term assignments mean you take on the full responsibility of the class teacher - INCLUDING MARKING AND PREPARATION. On the plus side though you will be able to build relationships with your classes and be safe in the knowledge that you have regular work.
